Studies show that there are four steps to reduce or prevent
osteoporosis. No one step alone is enough to prevent osteoporosis,
but all four may. With lifestyle modifications which includes, a balanced
diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, no smoking and limited alcohol
intake, bone density testing and preventative medication when appropriate,
and weight-bearing exercise women can fight back.
An effective resistance training program for both bone and
muscle must contain a weight-bearing program and should be
done at least two days per week, performing one set of 8 to 10 exercises
that challenge the major muscle groups. Certainly,
water based and hydraulic-based exercises are beneficial to the cardiovascular
system, but weight-bearing activities remains the
only means to actually increase new bone formation
in mature skeleton. Even walking and running do not represent enough
of a load challenge, to signal an increase in bone mass.
Weight loss management is an additional benefit to
lean muscle tissue which is partly responsible for the number of calories
burned at rest, making it easier to maintain a healthy body weight.
By incorporating strength training into your activity
program, as well as following a moderate diet, you’ll
be able to maintain lean muscle mass while you lose fat. There also
appears to be an association between lean muscle mass and bone mass,
whereby individuals with the highest amount of muscle also tend to
have the highest bone density.
Interval training that provides both an aerobic and muscle
endurance program has been shown to have greater success
in weight loss, and maintaining that weight loss by reducing body
fat and preventing lean muscle tissue. Lean muscle tissue increases
(BMR) resting metabolism.
